The Supreme Court of Texas has posted a job for LEGAL / RESEARCH ASSISTANT I, Supreme Court Permanent Judicial Commission for Children, Youth and Families

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level legal assistant work for the Supreme Court Permanent Judicial Commission for Children, Youth and Families. The work involves researching, analyzing, investigating, and national and state child protection policy, U.S. and state statutes, and caselaw to assist the Commission with its strategies. Works under close supervision, with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

* Drafts and prepares bill analyses, research papers, reports and memos.
* Researches and analyzes legal sources such as policy statements and documents, statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, and rules and regulations.
* Checks citations, quotations, footnotes, and references for accuracy.
* Summarizes laws, rules, and regulations.
* Attends legislative hearings and helps Commission staff prepare testimony.
* Assists in coordinating, assembling, and preparing research papers, reports, bill analyses, bill reviews and fiscal notes, as required.
* Assists in researching and preparing legislative histories.
* Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

* Graduation from an accredited law school. Experience may not be substituted for this requirement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Knowledge of legal terminology, of research methods and techniques, and of administrative, executive, judicial and legislative terms and processes.
* Skill in the use of office equipment, Microsoft Word, search engines such as Westlaw and LexisNexis, and other searchable internet resources needed to accomplish the tasks assigned.
