The Rocky Mountains Children’s Law Center

Most people think that when a child is removed from his or her abuser, the abuse ends and foster care offers them the opportunity to heal. But that’s not always the way it works. The instability of the overwhelmed foster care system routinely retraumatizes children by forcing them to repeatedly adjust to new homes, schools, families, and environments. Academic progress is routinely disrupted. 2007 studies on adult outcomes for former foster youth reported sobering results

  • Nearly 25% do not have a high school diploma or a GED.
  • One in five will become homeless.
  • One in four will be incarcerated within two years of leaving the system.

The Children’s Law Center aims to change this grim future for these children by providing zealous legal representation to nearly 1,000 each year. The Children’s Law Center’s full-time attorneys are appointed by the court to look out for their child-client’s best interests. They have the legal expertise to navigate the court system and secure resources to ensure that their child clients get the stability, education, therapy and guidance they need to heal from past traumas and move toward a brighter future.

Without the dedicated attorneys at the Children’s Law Center, hundreds of children would find themselves defenseless.
